The 2015 Athens production of King Lear featured scenography by Numen/ForUse that fused industrial minimalism with theatrical intensity, with Prostoria’s Oblique armchairs enhancing the stark visual language of power and despair.

The scenography for Shakespeare’s King Lear, staged in Athens in 2015, combines raw industrial aesthetics with dramatic visual elements, creating a hauntingly atmospheric setting. Designed by Numen/ForUse, Prostoria’s permanent collaborators, the production utilized Oblique armchairs in black fabric to complement the stark and minimalist design.

Positioned on a coal-hued wooden platform against a backdrop of aged concrete, the chairs’ angular geometry and bold presence mirrored the play’s themes of power, betrayal, and existential despair. Their ergonomic design and distinct triangular profile added both visual impact and functional comfort to the performance space.
As the dramatic tension unfolded, the scenography evolved with dynamic elements like an inflated plastic foil, creating a surreal landscape that reflected King Lear’s descent into madness.
